The First Lady's Luncheon

In honor of the First Lady of the United States, a luncheon was held April 17, 2008. This year, “The First Lady’s Luncheon," a 100-year tradition, was marked by Mrs. Alfredia Scott (wife of Congressman David Scott), serving as the first African American hostess.

First Lady's Luncheon

Mrs. Scott and the Congressional Club asked Arts Clayton to assist in selecting local artists to produce unique pieces of art which were presented to attendees during this prestigious social event.

Theresa Fontes-Black was commissioned to create 2100 glass-beaded necklaces of various colors, shapes and sizes. This was a special surprise for those who attended.

Debra Svitil was chosen to design, create and present a handmade quilt to First Lady, Mrs. Laura Bush. The quilt, measuring six and a half feet square, featured Mrs. Bush’s portrait enhanced by more than 30 different color threads. Hand-stitched into the quilt are several bluebonnets, long-horns, pecans, armadillos and monarch butterflies which are all symbols of her home state of Texas.

Mrs. Scott boasted on behalf of Arts Clayton by saying, “All of the guests will be receiving a piece of artwork from Clayton County, Georgia. The First Lady of the United States will see the work of this organization and have a piece of it forever. I think everybody can be very proud of this.” Both artists expressed that it was an overwhelming honor and great compliment to be commissioned to create this artwork and represent the wealth of talented artists from Arts Clayton.
